Karenni History
The Karenni are members of an ethnic group living in eastern Burma. According to Thailand’s Department of Statistics, there are over 200,000 Karenni people who live on both sides of Myanmar-Thailand border. The term Karenni is an umbrella term and refers to all ethnic groups speaking Tibeto-Burman languages.

The Karenni States of Burma were a collection of small independent states situated in eastern Burma. During part of their history they came under Siamese suzerainty but from 1878 to 1941. They were an integral part of British Burma. The term Karenni derives from Burmese Karné or Kayan which means hill people. It is a misnomer in that most of these peoples are not hills tribes, but rather forest dwellers. Some are agriculturalists who grow wet rice.
